Number 1: Rode NT2A ($399.00)
Alright alright, not a controversial, stir-the-pot choice for the number one slot, and to
some, maybe even a passé' mic, but I believe that is due to clever competitive marketing, not to objective fact. And I realize
another Rode already made this list, but hey, the objective was not to make sure that five different brands were represented, the
goal was to name, in my opinion, the best values in a certain price class. With all that said, let me succinctly state my reasons
why I believe this is simply the best choice as a budget "workhorse" mic for the project studio.
1. It really does have a great
sound. Everything you want to hear in a mic is here. Smooth, full, warm, detailed. It works on perhaps the greatest
variety of sources on this list. It stacks nicely, without making you uneasy about recording multiple tracks with one mic.
It also has a unique way of sounding really good on just about any preamp you use. Whether a budget pre such as a DBX 376 or
an ART tube channel, or a pricier pre such as an Avalon or Vintech. Whether tube or class A discrete, it works them all with
finesse.
2. Simply amazing noise specs. 7 db, one of the quietest mics you can buy (beat out on this list only by
its less expensive sibling, the NT1000). You can fearlessly record the most dynamic or whisper quiet sources
3. Ready
for a big one.....? Here it is.....DUAL DIAPHRAGM! Ta Daaaa! Remember, versatility on a budget is a key here.
Not only can this mic record multiple voices such as choir or background overdubs in figure 8 or omni mode, but these modes give you
other options for sonic sculpting if you have a well tuned room. For $399.00 how can you beat it?
4. And yes, it
has the ability to attenuate loud sources (two way pad!), and roll off proximately or low frequency rumble (also 2 way!).
5.
And finally, these mics are well designed, rugged, and durable. Rode customer service has also been really outstanding in my
experience.
So there it is! Now go buy mics, and do what I do; Promise yourself you will only buy one mic, and come home
with three!
